Large Spindles for Hefty Fibers

By Lisa Chan - Posted on 21 February 2010

I've been experimenting with large supported spindles for fibers that are hairy and have a very long staple length.

Large Osage Orange Spindle

Here's the head of an Osage Orange supported spindle. It's a whale, weighing in at 4oz and a length of 11 1/2 inches. It takes some hand strength to get it rotating. Once engaged, it allows for comfortable drafting in the supported spindle technique. I personally have not seen anything like this elsewhere. The head is a smidgen smaller than my fist. You could brain someone with it, so be careful about waving something like this around... if anybody messed with you on a bus, you could brandish it at them scarily, "Watch yourself, buddy-o!"
